Life returns to normal.

All I could think of, while juggling kittens and Emmaline and the Usual Suspects, was what a relief it would be when the little guys got out of the house and I could go back to peacefully sleeping with Roo and Tink in my bed. What I forgot was that Tink steals my spot and Roo has now lost the knack of sleeping through the night, so I’m having trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Sigh.

In other news, my friend Roz has a dogblog! And you should stick it in your feed reader, or periodically check in on it. She is a much more dedicated dog trainer than I am, with the result of much more polite dogs. Also you should glance at the links on the right side of her page and click over to her Flickr account, because she’s a talented photographer as well as being an excellent dog trainer.

True story, I once kept her dog Dexter for six weeks while she and her husband found housing that took pets, and despite my best efforts I did not manage to untrain him to ask before getting on the furniture. That’s how good she is.

Three…two…one…and then there were none.

All three of my tiny terrorist cells have been embedded now. The bedroom feels pretty empty since I don’t get purrbombed as soon as I walk in the door! It was a little sad for me to part with the little fuzzballs, but on the other hand they are in three excellent homes and I’ve met some fantastic people through this project, from the people spreading the word about kittens to the people who were so generous and donated or bought a scarf to help pay for vet care for kittens, to the people who cheered me on and listened to me whine and flail and complain about kittens. If you ever have doubts about the human race, think of this: there’s three kittens in three loving homes because a bunch of strangers on the internet rallied around them.

None of the people who took in kittens heard about kittens directly from me; one heard from Cherie Priest[1], one heard from a friend who reads Ginmar on Livejournal, and one heard about them on Facebook. Getting the word out is the hardest part, really, so if you run across a plea for a pet who needs help and “all” you can do is get the word out, NEVER think that’s a small thing!

And then there were the people who donated money for their vet care; I don’t want to list names because I don’t have permission from everyone and I’m afraid I’d leave someone out, but you were all so incredibly generous. I seriously had a cry a couple times because people sent what they could to my kittens, and I am so deeply, deeply, incredibly grateful to you all. You are fabulous.

I’m even more afraid of leaving out someone if I start mentioning my support system who listened to me when I was discouraged and propped me up and kept me trying to trap kittens and find homes for kittens. You guys got me through.

All together, the word-passers, and the donators, and the listeners-to-whining, you group of people who have never met each other have done such an incredible and miraculous thing: at the height of kitten season, you guys got my three little boys into perfect homes. I wish I could hug you all.

Meanwhile, back at the Manor, life is settling into what passes for normal. Tonight I can go to sleep with Tink and Roo again; the Best Mother Ever will have everyone else sleeping with her. Lucky Mom! Daniel gets here in less than a month and I still need to clean a bunch of stuff out of his room, in less than two months we’ll be getting married so there’s the wedding to plan. And right around the time the wedding happens, Grace’s kittens will be coming up to get trapped.

I plan on handing kittens out as wedding favors. There’s no way that could possibly go horribly wrong, right?

I JEST. But the thought is tempting.

[1] If you want to show Cherie some love, she is an author! If you like excitement, adventure, and usually some zombies (and if not zombies, explosions, although sometimes there are zombies AND explosions), along with strong female protagonists who are not Too Stupid To Live, well, click on over to her website there and maybe buy a book, k?

First tiny terrorist successfully embedded.

Zeke (Intrepid) went off to his new people today. He was a jewel in the carrier on the way, purring and sleeping and generally being laid-back. I’ve gotten an update from his new people already, and within a couple hours he was ready to explore, claim his new digs, and demand worship from the thumb monkeys with whom he finds himself.

My little kittenboy done good. His whiskery, charming face has snagged him a most excellent home with kind people who understand that sometimes kittens just have to climb your leg if you don’t pet them fast enough. And I didn’t even cry when I left him there, so go me. I’m just kind of kicking myself for not having gotten a pic of him with his new monkey slavespeople.

Tomorrow, his brothers go out to opposite points of the compass. My bedroom will be all mine again, but I can’t help thinking it will feel a little empty. Then again, Grace is definitely nursing, so…

Well that’s a relief.

News the first: Daniel’s visa has been approved! Excitement abounds in these parts, and we’re setting an actual wedding date and working out his plane ticket and everything.

News the second: Emmett (Astute) and Zeke (Intrepid) came through neutering just fine, and in fact appear to have not noticed they had surgery. Ah, the boundless powers of recovery of kittens! They go home this weekend, starting with Zeke on Saturday and then Badger on Sunday morning and Emmett, last kitten standing, on Sunday afternoon, which means this evening I need to do one more photo shoot.

They’re such amazing little guys, really. Emmett of course has been a non-stop purrbot from day one, but Zeke and Badger have gone from being little balls of hissy hate for all things human to enthusiastically curious and friendly and adorable kittens. Although they are looking much less kitteny already, these days they look more like little miniature cats. And while I can’t wait for life to return to semi-normal here, I’m going to miss the little buggers. Emmett is the very image of his mama Emmaline, only with the coloring of Romeo (with added tabby stripes–will he grow out of them? I don’t know.), right down to the adorable wee back-curved ears that look a little like devil horns. Badger is a small pile of stripey, fluffy, snuggly goodness, with the most amazing long eyelashes and of course adorable white toes in front. Zeke is just more of a handsome bastard every day, his straight profile and larger ears very reminiscent of the build of an “Oriental” body-type breed like the Siamese or the Cornish Rex, but covered in a soft, long coat that features Bengal-type stripes and spots.

I’m hoping their new owners keep me posted as they grow into adult cats, and I get to see them become huge and indolent beasts who take over their new households with rampaging demands for love and playtime.

News the third: the Best Mother Ever will be here today, hooray! Because now that we know when Daniel will be arriving, we can do actual wedding stuff.

One is the loneliest number…

With Emmett and Zeke (Astute and Intrepid) at the vet last night, I thought I should sleep with Badger to keep him from being too lonely, given that he was distress calling and all.

Never again, gentle reader. Who would have thought that one little kitten was much more difficult to sleep with than three? But he was. He snuggled me ferociously, kneading with tiny kittenpaws (and claws), he tried to get me to play with him, he meeped at me if petting and interaction was not forthcoming. I finally fell into a fitful sleep around 2130 and then got woken up at midnight for round two, at which point I moved out to the futon in the living room where the adults welcomed me with peaceful snuggling. There is something to be said for being cuddled by a total of 200 pounds of dog and 8 pounds of cat.

In other news, are you in the midwest? Do you need a dog? Allow me to introduce you to Grace! She is a sweetheart being fostered with some people I know in Kansas, and she is looking for her forever people. Her ideal home would have no small animals in it, as she has some prey drive going on, but she lovesloveslooooooves people and would like nothing better than some people who want to pet her and let her stay near them all the time. Check her out, hey? And pass the word along if you have a midwestern friend looking for a sweet girl to hang out with.

Kitten update, again.

Emmett (Astute) and Zeke (Intrepid) go in to get neutered this week, the scarf sale topped off funds enough for it! Yay! There’s still three left if you feel the urge to own one! I drop them off Tuesday night, they get snipped on Wednesday, and I pick them up on Thursday, vax’d and neutered and ready to go. Badger needs to go in to get vax’d, the little bugger can’t get neutered because one testicle hasn’t bothered to descend yet, but his new person has graciously agreed to take him anyway and we will work out the neutering later. Hopefully I can set up times to get the other two boys into their new homes this weekend, too!

This weekend won’t be a moment too soon, I’m really fond of the little hairy buggers, who have gone from being little fearful feral beasties to small cats who purrbomb you the minute you step into the room, seriously. I am so proud of how they’ve come around!

Next up, getting Emmaline spayed and continuing the quest to integrate her into the household, and figuring out how to get a pregnant cat to a friend of mine in Illinois. No rest for the wicked! Oh, and Daniel’s interview is Thursday, and school starts the 19th, so life is about to get really, really exciting on top of the usual cat- and dog-related excitement. Wish me luck!

My Shedder loves me.

The scene: Manor of Mixed Blessings, 0300. I am passed out on the futon in the living room because it was easier than trying to go to bed in my bedroom.[1]

Zille: Pssssst.
Me: Mfgsrkt?
Tink: Shhhh.
Zille: PSSSSSST.
Me: Wha?
Tink: SHHHHH.
Zille: I had a thought. What if we played fetchy?
Me: What time is it?
Tink: Sleeping time. #$#* off, Zille.
Zille: I am deeply wounded by Tink’s mean words.
Tink: They will be mean actions if you don’t stop.
Me: No fighting. It is three in the morning.
Zille: Could we play fetchy?
Me: No.
Zille: Are you sure?
Tink: I said SHUT UP.
Beowulf: Are we getting up?
Me: Yes, I am sure. No, we are not getting up. Tink, stop instigating and go back to sleep.
Tink: I didn’t instigate anything. She started it. And I’m not speaking to you, you had adventures without me.
Zille: Just a little fetchy?
Beowulf: Are there squirrels?
Me: No fetchy. No squirrels. Fine, Tink, sulk.
Zille: A teeny weeny bit of fetchy? Just throw it once? Look, I have the ball right. here.
Me: Ow. Thank you for dropping a tennis ball on my head.
Zille: It’s not problem. Maybe you could throw it?
Me: NO. NO FETCHY AT THREE IN THE MORNING.
Zille: Can I suck your toes?
Me: Fine. You can suck my toes. Just let me sleep.
Tink: If she gets to suck your toes, I’m going to stick my tongue in your ear.
Me: I DIDN’T EVEN WANT DOGS. I WANTED PET ROCKS.

In other news, Grace skipped breakfast yesterday morning but did show up for dinner, no longer looking pregnant. So now I get to keep tabs on her to see if she’s nursing so I know if any kittens survived. Noodlehead and Briar Rose are still massively pregnant, though.

[1] SLEEPING IN MY BEDROOM THESE DAYS MEANS MAKING A CHOICE: GO THROUGH ALL THE HASSLE OF MOVING THE KITTENS TO THE BATHROOM FOR THE NIGHT, OR GET INCESSANTLY BARKED AND WHINED AT FROM TINK AND ROO ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CLOSED DOOR? IT WAS EASIER TO JUST FALL OVER IN THE LIVING ROOM.

Fundraising for Manor Cats

I have tried really hard for it not to come to this, because I don’t think it’s really fair to ask other people to fund my lifestyle as a crazy cat lady. But I’ve got four foster cats at the moment and three heavily pregnant girls outside, and there is just not enough money in my personal account to do everything that needs to be done for everyone.

So below the cut are ninethree silk scarves, two with imperfections. Leave a comment to say which one you’re claiming, and I’ll get in touch so we can do the financials, or if you’d like to use Paypal you can click over to the Manor Cats page and send the money that way AFTER YOU COMMENT TO CLAIM YOUR SCARF. I do not wish to sell any scarves twice! I’ve listed a minimum price for each. The scarves come from a house that contains one smoker, seven cats, and three dogs. While I will wash them immediately before packing them up to go out, if you are allergic to smoke, cats, or dogs, PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS. Also the washing, drying, and folding means that they will go out to you substantially less wrinkled than they are in the pics. I have both Eucalan in regular and lavender scents, and a scent-free detergent, so please specify what you’d like me to use to clean your scarf before it goes out!

If you don’t wish to buy, but do wish to help, there is a button here on the Manor Cats page.

A plethora of puppies

So yesterday I went down to Blackthorn Kennel to visit my friend C and do my weekend job as Hand Model and Puppy Wrangler. I am getting quite experienced at this, seriously, so if you’re looking for a Hand Model and Puppy Wrangler, do let me know so I can expand my portfolio. This weekend, we wrangled the O litter a bit, a charming group of babies with East German bloodlines. Adorable? You have not seen adorable until you have eight four-week-old German Shedders trying to eat your shoes. While they’re on your feet.

Here I am wrangling a puppy, who as you can see is calm and cooperative.
And here you see my superior ability to get a puppy face pointed at the camera!

Zillekins went along and had a grand ol’ time playing with her buddies and I even convinced her to go swimming some, which is nice because it gets her clean without me having to pay someone to scrub her down. Although she could probably use a bath before the wedding. And C and I had a grand ol’ time, talking and going out for Mexican food in addition to eyeballing chickens (I have deep, deep chicken envy) and floating around in the pool trying not to get drowned by dogs. The Best Mother Ever came along for a little bit and got to visit with puppies, but then headed home from there. Never fear, she’ll be back next weekend as wedding planning kicks into gear!

Air Zille!

The Best Mother Ever is still here, so I got a chance to try and get fun fetchy pics by making her throw the fetchy squirrel-thing for Zille. Alas, most did not come out well because of the poor lighting conditions in the evening, but I did get one striking one!

A full body shot of Zille, a sable German Shedder. She is nearly upright, having leapt into the air to catch the orange and blue fetchy toy which is clenched in her mighty jaws. She is catching some serious air, as well as the fetchy toy!

Today, the Best Mother Ever and I are heading down to visit my friend C at Blackthorn Kennel. We will snorgle puppies, I will help out with chicken habitat, and hopefully I will wind up with a tired Shedder!
